The claim that Baha'is are persecuted in modern-day Iran is exaggerated. There is a narrative that the Iranian regime puts people in jail just for being Baha'is, but this is not the case. According to Baha'i Administration in the US, there are only around 90 Baha'is in prison in Iran, out of a total of 300,000 Baha'is in the country. This begs the question of why the Iranian regime would jail only a tiny fraction of the Baha'i population and leave the rest free!
As someone who has known many Iranian Baha'i immigrants to the US, the idea that Baha'is are heavily persecuted in Iran seems unlikely. In fact, some Iranian Baha'is have even returned to Iran after living in the US, which wouldn't happen if they were being persecuted in their home country. While there may be some instances of persecution and violence against Baha'is in Iran, much of the narrative around this issue seems to be hype and exaggeration.
