In chapter 2, "Return to Sources," Hourani narrates his war years in Lebanon, Palestine, and Egypt, where he served at G.H.Q. Chapter 3, "Discovery of America," deals with his work as head of the Arab Office in Washington, which was set up by the Arab League and directed by Musa Alami, of whom a very sympathetic picture is drawn. There Hourani came in contact with several Zionist leaders, such as Nahum Goldmann and Moshe Shertok.
Hourani's activities brought him in contact with many
interesting people in politics and the arts, from President Kennedy at one end
to Henryk Szeryng and Joan Littlewood at the other. Personally, I wish he had
told us a little more about his fellow students at Oxford—who included future
politicians, such as Harold Wilson, Edward Heath, Dennis Healey and Keith
Joseph—and also about his colleagues and students at Beirut.
