Jewish Post & Opinion, a New York City newspaper, recently ran an article entitled “Missionary Agitation in Israel,” referring to efforts to convert Jewish children and adults in the Holy Land. The article included this statement: “A splendid positive example is set by the Bahá’í Faith. Although their world center is in Israel, this religion has made it a matter of deliberate policy not to carry on missionary activity here and not even to accept converts within Israel, in recognition of the hospitality which the Bahá’ís enjoy here.”

It is Baha'u'llah Who, in the Old Testament hath been named YHWH (Jehovah)

In a number of his epistles of the late ‘Akka period, Baha’u’llah clearly claimed to be YHWH, the Divinity Who conversed with Moses from the burning bush and whose eschatological advent as “YHWH of hosts” (“the Lord of hosts’’) was predicted by the Israelite prophets. In, for example, the following lines addressed to a Jewish convert to the Baha’i Faith named Aga Jan, Baha’u’llah writes:

The Face of the Ancient One [Baha’u’llah] hath turned towards the sages (hukama) in the Land of al-ha and al-mim [Hamdadan, in Iran] and announceth unto them the glad-tidings of the Ridvan (Paradise) of God, the Lord of all the worlds: “By God! He Who hath been named YHWH ‘‘Jehovah” in the Torah hath come.

On similar lines is the following extract from an epistle of Baha’u’llah to the Baha’i poet ‘Andalib (and others):

He [Baha’u’llah] it is Who, in the Old Testament (Torah) hath been named YHWH “Jehovah”...

A good many passages are to be found in the Tablets of the late ‘Akka period in which Baha’u’llah refers to himself as “the Lord (YHWH) of hosts” (Arabic: rabb al-junud). One such passage reads as follows:

This is the Day in which He Who cried out on the Mount (munadi at-tur) hath held converse and the Lord of Hosts (rabb al-junud) proclaimed before all the world: ‘‘No God is there except Me, the Mighty, the Knowing.’’

‘Abdu’l-Baha specifically identified the Biblical ‘‘Lord of Hosts’’ with his father and spoke of the “hosts’’ as the stalwart members of the Baha’i community.”

Abdu'l Baha and Baha'u'llah were lying through their teeth when they pretended to be pious Muslims while propagating a doctrine heretical to Islam.

Menachem Mendel Schneerson is an example of a relgious leader who stayed within the bounds of his religion. Like Baha'u'llah, he was a prolific writer whose teachings fill over 400 volumes. Like Baha'u'llah he commanded a sect of believers who considered him to be divine, indeed, perhaps the Messiah. Like Baha'u'llah, his grave at Montefiore Cemetery in Queens has become a site of pilgirmage for his followers. Schneerson also shared traits with Shoghi Effendi. He was a reluctant Messiah, perhaps planning to become an engineer before being pressed into service based on his family and religious connections. Like Shoghi, he was begged by his sect to take up the mantle of leadership. (Many members of the sect were murdered during the Holocaust and the survival of the group was in question at the time) Like Shoghi, he needed time to think about it and adjust himself to the idea of being a major religious leader. He was a hard worker, like Shoghi, rarely taking a vacation, a man whose chief recreation was visiting the grave of his father-in-law. Like Shoghi, he was married but did not have children. Like Shoghi, overwork contributed to his death, and like Shoghi he is buried within a day's journey of where he died. Indeed, Chabad headquarters is right down the road from the graveyard at 770 Eastern Parkway, Queens, NY. This is the "world center" for the Chabad/Lubavich movement. Like Shoghi, he did not name a successor although he did leave a will.

But the essential difference is this. Schneerson directed his followers back to Jewish teachings, denying claims of his own divinity. (though he may have encouraged his followers to worship him, the subject is debated). He founded a mulitude of Jewish charities to the point where non-religious Jews consider Chabad the public face of Jewish Orthodoxy despite it's sectarian leanings. His organization directs non-religious Jews back to traditonal practices. Schneerson might or (more likely) not be the promised Messiah, but it was clear to all that he would never replace Moses.

On Sunday, March 1, 1992, Gabriel Erem, the editor of Lifestyles Magazine told Schneerson that on the occasion of his ninetieth birthday they would be publishing a special issue and wanted to know what his message to the world was. Schneerson replied that "'Ninety', in Hebrew, is 'tzaddik'; which means 'righteous.' And that is a direct indication for every person to become a real tzaddik—a righteous person, and to do so for many years, until 120. "This message", Schneerson added, "applies equally to Jews and non-Jews". (107)

This long digression is simply a way of saying that if a group remains within a prophetic tradition then they are a sect. If they go beyond that and replace or supercede a prophet they are a a new religion (as Bahai's would have it) or a cult (as some Baha'i critics, especially zealous Christians and Muslims would put it). Either way, Abdu'l Baha and Baha'u'llah were lying through their teeth when they pretended to be pious Muslims while propagating a doctrine heretical to Islam. Shoghi, to his credit ended this deceitful practice of his ancestors.

Muslim and Jewish messianic pretenders who attracted followers from both the Islamic and Jewish community

Later Muslim and Jewish messianic pretenders who attracted followers from both the Islamic and Jewish community appeared in Yemen (partly Ottoman), around the time when the Bab appeared as the Mahdi and Baha'u'llah claimed to be the Messiah. Two of the Yemenites claimants, Faqih Sa'id (1840) and Sharif Isma'il (1846), were Muslims and proclaimed that they were 'mahdis' who would restore Islam, drive out the 'infidel' British from Aden and hasten the decline of the Ottoman Empire in an apocalyptic process. In the middle of the nineteenth century Yemen was tense with messianic anticipations that included the Jews. It culminated in the appearance of two claimants to a Jewish messiahship, Shukr Kuhayl I (Shukr ben Salim Kuhayl, 1861-1865), the 'resurrected' Shukr Kuhayl II (Yehuda bar Shalom, 1868 - 1875), and the messianic herald Yosef 'Abdallah (1888 - 1895). The first two appeared in 'one of the most politically unstable periods in the history of Yemen, one in which chaos and insecurity prevailed and the central government was unable to function' and the third was active under a more stable Ottoman government. All three preached the 'End of Time ' and near redemption from the enemies. Shukr Kuhayl II was the most organised and had the greatest success.

Although not Shi'i, one of the best known among the Muslim 'mahdis' is the Sudanese popular religious leader Muhammad Ahmad (1844 - 1885). Having travelled in areas neighbouring Sudan, he realised that people were discontent with the rule of the Ottoman-Egyptians and the British. He also sensed a messianic expectation among the masses demonstrated by the wish that the awaited Mahdi would save them. In 1881 Muhammad Ahmad proclaimed himself as the Mahdi and defied the usurpers. He died in 1885 after the fall of Khartoum in that same year but his Mahdist regime ruled Sudan until the Anglo-Egyptian rule was re-established in 1898. This was a national revolution and an Islamic revivalist movement that challenged not only the West but at the same time the authority of the Ottoman Sultan and probably had the potential to unify the Arab Muslims under the Ottomans against the established order.

Selling lands to the Jewish National Fund

In the late nineteenth century, Badi'a Effendi of Acre (one of the principal benefactors of the Bahai faith) began buying into Isfiyya's masha'a lands with the consent of the Mukhtar and the village elders. Ultimately he acquired about one fourth of the total. In the mid 1920's he sold the titles to the Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemet) without consulting the villagers (cf. Granovsky 1931:table 8). When the villagers discovered this they decided to end the periodic redistributions of the land in order to benefit from the law granting title to anyone who could prove continuous cultivation for ten years.

These people, loyal, devoted and sincere though they were, were still, to a great extent, living in their parent religion's house, so to speak; there were Christian Baha'is, Jewish Baha'is, Muhammadan Baha'is and so on. They believed in the Baha'i' Faith but were intimately connected with their former churches. Like fruit on a tree, they were a new crop but still stuck to the old branch. Shaykh Ahmad's mystical cosmology and Kabbalah

The close parallels between Shaykh Ahmad's mystical cosmology of the letters and the gematria of the Kabbalah is striking. Moses Cordovera of the sixteenth-century Safed school in Ottoman Palestine saw the Pentateuch or Torah as made up of divine letters, themselves manifestations of the divine light, which go on to form the names of God and ultimately worlds and worldly beings, as the letters undergo a "fall" or materialization. The gnostic motif of the material universe as "fallen" or evil is missing in Shaykhism, though gross matter is seen as inferior to subtle spirituality. But similarities between the two movements clearly exist, and they derive in part from a common Mediterranean heritage of ancient Jewish conceptions, Neoplatonism, and Gnosticism, which percolated into the Shi'ism of the eighth century and into medieval Judaism. The possibility that Muslim mystics and Kabbalists in places such as Muslim Spain, Isma'ili Yemen, and Ottoman Palestine influenced one another also cannot be dismissed. Beyond such a shared legacy of ideas, Kabbalism and Shaykhism developed some of their resemblance because the masters of both employed a similar spiritual logic in reworking this heritage.

The doctrine of mazhariyya, which turns all religious founders into ‘Manifestations of God’ derives from the esoteric systems of Shi'ism and Sufism, which means that most Sunni Muslims will find it repugnant. Other components of the world religions, from the Jewish halakha to the crucifixion (which Baha’is accept, but which Muslims deny) to the Trinity to circumcision (which Baha’is have abandoned) to Holy Communion to performing the hajj all have to be consigned to the dustbin.

Baha'u'llah's law does not consider semen unclean, Pork is allowed and the concept of "uncleanness" is abolished.

One of the major reforms in the Bahá’í teachings involves the laws of cleanliness, which were instituted in various faiths, including Hinduism and Judaism. In The Most Holy Book, Bahá’u’lláh revokes the notion of the uncleanness of various objects and people, specifically “of semen [and] of certain objects for purposes of prostration”. This serves as a perfect illustration of what I call a prescriptive religious reform.

In the Law of Moses, the discharge of semen was considered unclean: “If a man has an emission of semen, he shall bathe his whole body in water, and be unclean until the evening… If a man lies with a woman and has an emission of semen, both of them shall bathe in water, and be unclean until the evening” (Lev. 15.16, 18). Bahá’u’lláh’s law, in contrast, does not consider semen unclean despite the fact that in the last several thousand years the nature of semen obviously has not changed. As you can see, we are dealing not with natural but with ritualistic purity, which the Biblical text explicitly confirms: “when any man has a discharge from its member, his discharge makes him ceremonially unclean” (Lev. 15.2).

'Abdu'l-Baha berated Jews for not accepting Christ:

When you [the Jewish people] glorify and honor the memory of Christ, rest assured that the Christians will take your hands in real fellowship. All difficulty, hesitancy and restraint will vanish. Consider the troubles and persecutions heaped upon you in Russia for your fanaticism of unbelief. And you must not think that this is ended.

This humiliation will continue forever. The time may come when in Europe itself they will arise against the Jews. But your declaration that Christ was the Word of God will end all such trouble. My advice is that in order to become honorable, protected and secure among the nations of the world, in order that the Christians may love and safeguard the Israelitish people, you should be willing to announce your belief in Christ, the Word of God. This is a complete statement; there is nothing more. Is it not thoughtless, ignorant prejudice which restrains you from doing so? Declare that, verily, the Word of God was realized in Him, and all will be right.

Within the framework of the Faith his derision of the Jews applies equally to Christians who rejected Muhammad, but he presumably knew he couldn't get away with upbraiding Christians (indeed its arguable his remarks to the Jews here were primarily for the benefit of his Christian audience, showing he advocates for Christ).

It is interesting that he makes ominous remarks which Baha'is would likely interpret as "prophecy", (apparently unaware of how unimpressive "prophesizing" anti-semitism in Europe is), and the Research Department of the Universal House of Justice included it in a compilation on the holocaust.

It seems to me that the implication is that the House views these comments as saying Jews not accepting Christ 'caused' the Holocaust, and judging by the tone of 'Abdu'l-Baha's remarks one could almost say the implication is they deserved it (although that may be somewhat of a long bow to draw.)

Smith (Baha'i scholar) quotes Shoghi Effendi to the effect that Baha'ism does not distort the teachings of other religions, but does not examine the obvious distortions that Baha'i teachings create for Jews, Christians, Muslims and others. It is quite easy to see that key doctrines in all other faiths are contradicted by Baha'i beliefs and that there are no simple ways to reconcile them.
