When Diyá’u’lláh Effendi died (in approximately 1898), the followers of 'Abbás Effendi "did not even close their shops and offices on that day, as is customary, but on the contrary manifested joy and gladness and quaffed the drinks commonly used on festivals". This behavior astonished all witnesses, whether family, strangers, or kin.
