Nakba, or “catastrophe”, is observed to remember the expulsion of 700,000 Palestinians from their homes after the establishment of Israel in 1948.
Many Palestinians recall locking their houses for the last time in May of that year, convinced they would return in a week or two, when Israeli militias showed up to force them out.
Palestinians legally hold the ‘right of return’ to their own lands, which are now considered Israeli territory, according to the UN General Assembly Resolution 194 of 1948.
Some of them still hold onto their house keys as a symbol of belonging, with full faith in the day of their return.
